Preheat oven to 375°. Mix flour, baking soda and salt. In a separate bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg and vanilla.
Add flour mixture to cream mixture. Blend well. Dough will be very stiff. Divide into thirds and roll out to 1/8 inch thickness.
Cut out shapes and bake on an ungreased cookie sheet for 8-10 minutes.
Cover with Royal Icing!
